Diversity & Inclusion
In the last few years, diversity and inclusion (D&I) have been drawing attention as constituting one element, "S" (social), of ESG. Companies are required, mainly by their shareholders and business partners, to express their support and implement initiatives for the promotion of diversity in a manner that is visible externally. Internally within companies, it has also become indispensable for sustainable corporate management to create an environment that takes D&I into consideration.
In recent years, there have been proactive legislative amendments related to D&I to address harassments, workstyle reform-related issues, gender disparities, discrimination in employment of people with disabilities, and other issues, including the enactment of the Act on Promotion of Public Understanding of Diversity of Sexual Orientation and Gender Identity that took effect as of June 23, 2023. New court cases on these matters are also mounting. In particular, the establishment of a workplace environment for minorities is becoming increasingly important in human resources and labor relations in light of the Supreme Court's decision in July 2023 concerning a dispute involving the work environment for gender and sexual minorities.
